Brama

It would be impossible to neglect the picturesque location of Bydgoszcz. From the south it is surrounded by the Bydgoszcz Forest (Puszcza Bydgoska) and to the north of the city by the Tuchola Primeval Forest (Bory Tucholskie) - one of the largest forest areas in Poland.

However, the greenery of Bydgoszcz does not consist just of the forest areas that cover as much as 22% of the city area. The city is one of Poland’s leaders in terms of parks and roadside vegetation. The attention of tourists and inhabitants alike is attracted by the colourful arrangements of plants at roundabouts, numerous flowerbeds and floral compositions all over the city.

Bydgoszcz also boasts a silver medal and the honourable title of City - Garden, which was granted to the city in 1996 at the world contest in India. The total area of parks, gardens and squares, which are under the care of the city, is in fact more than 270 ha. Another 265 hectares is included in the roadside greenery and there are 35 ha of park at The Palace - Park Complex in Ostromecko. The largest "green lungs" of Bydgoszcz are situated in the Forest Park of Culture and Recreation - Myślęcinek with its forests – in total nearly 500 hectares of land.
Within the area of the city there are almost 80 monuments of nature, most of which are monuments of animated nature. In the city centre we can admire Pedunculate oaks in Jan Kochanowski park, Bald Cypresses in Kazimierz Wielki park, shrubby yews in Teatralny Sq. and beautiful magnolias at 12 Ossolińskich Av. That bloom in late May and early April.

In the centre of town - at Juliana Ursyna Niemcewicza St., we are recommended to visit the Botanical Garden Monument of Nature - Arboretum, a collection of over 400 species and varieties of plants that covers an area of 2.33 ha. The Botanical Garden is dominated by native species (almost 60%). However, we can also find here exotic specimens, like: Canadian Gymnocladus, Japanese Judas-tree, Sweet Chestnut and many others.

Bydgoszcz is not only a "green city", but also, by the decision of the National Environmental Council, an Environmentally Friendly Commune.
